Prepaid Sales Tax on Gasoline to Drop September 1st

Effective September 1, 2017, the prepaid sales tax rates on motor fuel is being reduced pursuant to NYACS-backed legislation authorizing the state Tax Commissioner to adjust the rates periodically to reflect price trends so that retailers don't have to overpay and then tie up cash waiting for refunds. On Long Island, the prepaid sales tax rate for motor fuel will drop from 21 cents to 16 cents per gallon; in New York City and the lower Hudson Valley, from 17.5 cents to 16 cents; and upstate, from 16 cents to 15 cents.
